Teething is one of the worst things you have to deal with as a parent, mostly just because it seriously sucks to watch your little one in pain. If you are going through it, you are probably on the search for some easy & safe remedies for your baby. If you are already immersed in the world of essential oils, you may already know what I am about to tell you. There are essentials oils for teething that can help to comfort and relieve your baby. However, you do not just want to jump into whatever oils. There are definitely some steps to follow for essential oil safety!

How to Dilute Essential Oils to Make Them Safe

I cannot stress this enough, whenever essential oils are used on a baby they must be well diluted!! You will apply the highly diluted essential oil along the top of their jaw and behind the ears. There is no need to actually rub the mixture along your babies jaw, and in fact, it is best to avoid any sort of ingestion. You will want a dilution rate somewhere between .10% and .20% for teething babies, which means around 1-2 drops for every ounce of carrier oil. Common carrier oils are a vegetable oil, olive oil, and coconut oil.

I am also going to recommend to avoid clove oil entirely. There are conflicting opinions about whether it is safe and it is much better to be safe rather than sorry. If used incorrectly, it will negatively affect your baby. On top of avoiding clove oil, I also stand by always speaking with your pediatrician before trying any natural teething remedies in young children. There are also aromatherapists you can speak to that will be able to guide you down the correct path if you are looking for answers from a professional.

Essential Oils for 4-6 Month Old Teething

You will basically be using essential oil in combination with a massage to soothe your baby. At this young of age, your baby is probably still very sensitive so it is recommended to use only two very gentle essential oils; lavender and chamomile.

Lavender

Even just the scent of lavender can calm me down, so using the essential oil in it’s diluted form will surely calm your grumpy teething baby. It is also a natural sedative making which will soothe your baby.

Roman Chamomile

Chamomile is also a natural sedative making it a great option for soothing teething. It is non-toxic, so you don’t have to worry too much about using it on a young infant.

Essential Oils for Teething over 7 Months

By 6-7 months old, your baby is a bit less sensitive opening up the doors to many more essential oil options for teething comfort. However, I do not advise using these if you are not comfortable with your diluting abilities. To avoid this, another option is to simply diffuse them throughout the room. Many of these will cause irritation if not diluted properly. Continue on to the section below about mixes made by essential oil brands as you will probably be better off with these!

Ginger

Ginger Essential Oil can help to alleviate pain caused by teething. You just need to be sure to properly dilute it to avoid irritation.

Marjoram

Marjoram alleviates pain by increasing circulation. Again, it is necessary to dilute this essential oil properly.
