So they finally did it. With two slime obsessed girls in my household, it was bound to happen. Usually, I have my girls make non-sticky slime, but recently they wanted to try to make some different “creations” of slime. So, after what feels like hours of reminding my girls to keep the slime on the table, I walked into their bedroom only to feel the cold and disgusting feeling of slime between my toes. So, if this happens to you, before you rip your hair out, cry, and drop the kid’s off at your mom’s house, relax! Believe it or not, it is possible to get slime out of your carpet. It’s easy and quick enough that you’ll be back on the sofa ugly-crying at this week’s episode of “This Is Us” in no time. Here’s how to get slime out of your carpet!

How to Get Slime Out of Carpet with White Vinegar

The first way to get slime out of your carpet is with white vinegar. Most people keep this around the house for cleaning, anyways.

  • Get a bucket and fill it with two parts warm water.
  • Then add 1 part white vinegar
  • Get a hand brush (if you don’t have one, these can be found at any dollar store). Gently loosen the slime from the carpet.
  • Move the brush in a circular motion.
  • Keep in mind that at this point, the slime isn’t going to disappear from the carpet thoroughly, but this step helps loosen anything that may have gotten deeper in.
  • After the slime is loosened from the carpet, use a clean, dry towel to clean up the debris.

Voila! You can now reward yourself with a glass of wine and one of your kids’ snack packs.

An Alternative Method to Clean Your Carpet

If, for some reason, you don’t have white vinegar handy, or you’re not too sure if you want to use it on your carpet, there’s another, even gentler way of removing slime from your carpet. If you’re like me and have a mild self-diagnosed case of OCD, you probably have a handheld steamer somewhere. This method also works if the slime has already begun or thoroughly dried out.

  • Gather your materials. You’ll need a handheld steamer (I use this one from Walmart daily), a handheld cleaning brush, and a clean towel.
  • The steps are similar to the vinegar method. However, instead of using the solution of water and vinegar to help loosen the slime from your carpet, you’ll use the steamer.
  • Holding the steamers about 6-12 inches away from the carpet is best. You don’t want to risk burning yourself or receiving a face-full of steam. Use the steamer to loosen the slime from the carpet, gently scrubbing the slime with your brush in between steam treatments.
  • When you’ve loosed the slime to the point where it’s no longer stuck to the carpet, use the clean, dry towel to clean up the remaining debris.

Again, this method works well for slime that has already dried on your carpet.

Before you decide to rip up your carpet or just put the whole house up for sale, consider using one of these two methods to get slime out of your carpet. Both of these methods are child and pet safe, and easy enough to do with materials you already have around the house! And don’t worry, in a few days you won’t be worrying about slime as you find yourself stepping on those blasted little mini brands, they hurt like the dickens.
