What’s your parenting style?

Are you more of an authoritarian, or do you subscribe to the free-range parenting school of thought? Perhaps you’re a permissive parent, or maybe you sometimes exhibit signs of helicopter parenting?

The thing is, no rule says you can only be one type of parent all the time. There will be days when you need to be more firm with your child and times when you feel you’ve got the hang of this parenting thing.

And yes, there will be days, maybe even weeks or months, when you feel like your parenting skills aren’t good enough. For those times when being a parent is a struggle, here are some tips that can help.

Understand Your Limitations

The goal isn’t to be a perfect parent. If you expect everything to be perfect, you’ll burn out by addressing everything instead of focusing on areas that need the most attention.

For example, you may be neglecting your needs because you fear that not showering your child with attention will negatively affect his or her development. While you’re giving your all to your kid, you’re also modeling that self-care isn’t essential.

Remember, it’s okay to have me-time. You don’t have to do everything yourself. If you make mistakes, own them, make amends if necessary, then move on.

Show Lots of Love

Do you kiss and hug your children as often as you can? Do you engage with them and make them feel that they’re important despite your busy schedule?

Smart parents know that it’s all about quality time. Whether it’s making time to play some board games, going on camping trips during the weekend, or simply talking with them, you have to make the most of your time together.

Being interested in what they like is also another way to show that you love them. Even when disciplining your kids, they have to know that your love isn’t conditional. You may not like what they did, but they should never have doubts about your love for them.

Be a Good Role Model

If you listen to kids, they will listen to you and others. Besides being a good listener, be sure to model honesty, tolerance, respect, kindness, and other traits you want your children to exhibit.

It may be challenging, but don’t forget that kids take their cues from you. Should you need help correcting negative behaviors such as yelling, there are many support groups online. You can also read books on gentle parenting for tips and advice on being calm when dealing with behavior issues.

Aside from books, see if your child can benefit from ABA services and other interventions.
